You know the great "Gnomes" episode of "South Park" with the famous 3-part plan? The Underpants Gnomes have a business plan:

1. Collect Underpants
2. ?
3. Profit!

They were collecting underpants, but they hadn't worked out why, yet they had a giddy confidence that the result would be profit. This historical research should point the gnomes to the answer: create widespread literacy.
