Do doctors waste your time by talking about themselves?

They're just trying to be friendly. They've heard they're supposed to have rapport or something.
The researchers studied the conversations looking for any hint that patients were helped when the doctors talked about themselves.

“We looked for any statement of comfort, any statement of appreciation, any deepening of the conversation,” Dr. Beckman said.

They found none.
None!

What is going on here? Is it something about the sort of person who becomes a doctor?
